Love it or loathe it, social media is very present in all of our lives and whilst it can be fun and harmless it can cause big problems at work whether you’re permanently employed or temping.

An ill-considered post on your Facebook or Instagram account can have consequences and this is not an urban myth.

We have seen assignments terminated because of a Facebook rant and employers are not averse to researching potential employees ‘social media presence.

So, our advice is:

  • Don’t befriend casual work acquaintances.
  • Don’t write anything about individuals or companies where you are working – this is a breach of your contract.
  • Avoid bad language or expressing controversial views.
  • Avoid being photographed doing something that could damage your reputation or future prospects.
  • Think about the impression that your internet presence creates and how it might influence a potential employer.
  • Make sure that your privacy settings only allow access by those people that you want to view your profile.
